Karl Gerdes
Dr. Karl Gerdes has more than 47 years of experience in the oil & gas industry with broad background in the changing energy market and specific expertise in natural gas processing and treating, emerging gas technology (e.g. gas-to-liquids), options for gas monetization, and in technology to mitigate GHG emissions from industrial operations (CO2 Capture & Geologic Storage, or CCS). Karl has extensive experience in new technology assessment (due diligence and technology readiness), as well as development and deployment. Karl served for more than 30 years on technical committees of GPA Midstream (formerly Gas Processors Association) and was chair of the research program from 2008 until 2021. He edited the 4th volume of results from the CO2 Capture Project (CCP), an award-winning international collaboration of global energy companies. He is currently editing volume 5 of CCP results. He is an advisor to the Peter Cook Center for CCS Research at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Previously, Dr. Gerdes worked 37 years for Chevron, retiring in June 2013. He was a senior technical consultant within Chevron with responsibilities for strategic technology planning in the natural gas realm, in addition to the detailed technical role of expert advice for capital projects, plant operations, and execution of research. Among his assignments was technical liaison to the CO2 Capture Project from its inception in 2000 and to the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technology (CO2CRC), from its beginnings in 2002. He earned his MS and PhD from UC Davis and BS from the South Dakota School of Mines, all in Chemical Engineering. Karl joined PetroSkills as an instructor in 2021.
