AVOI Predicting Reservoir Characteristics with Pre-stack Seismic Amplitude Analysis and Inversion

Course

About the Course

Course participants will develop analytical skills and the conceptual insights required to use seismic amplitude vs. offset information (AVO) to predict reservoir lithology and fluid content of reservoirs. The learning objectives of the course are taught using a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises and a review of the landmark studies and case histories and is suitable for anyone with interests in geoscience and petroleum engineering. Learners will be better placed to understand why they do the tasks expected of them and will be able to apply new skills and more expertly appreciate the work their colleagues and experts are presenting to them

Target Audience

The course is intended for geophysicists, geologists and petrophysicists with little exposure to AVO concepts and analysis techniques, as well as engineers and seismic acquisition and processing specialists. The course will also be useful for managers with non-technical backgrounds who need to understand how their own experts are using AVO technology to evaluate prospects and development opportunities.

You Will Learn

  • Clearly understand how hydrocarbons affect the seismic image
  • Use direct hydrocarbon indicators and AVO in the assessment of projects
  • Integrate these technologies into an interpretation project
  • Better understand the nature of the seismic image as it relates to hydrocarbons
  • Utilize the information available in the literature from experts in this field of seismic analysis

Course Content

Material Properties - Physical and elastic properties of solids and fluids using springs

Rocks and their physics - Rocks and how their bulk physical and elastic properties are determined

Basic seismic amplitudes - Seismic amplitudes – from zero-incidence to angle-dependent – how they are calculated.

Review of amplitude preserving seismic processing - What processing is needed for seismic data to be ready for amplitude analysis.

Qualitative AVO Interpretation - How seismic displays are used to recognize AVO responses.

Quantitative AVO Analysis - How attributes can be calculated to simplify the information of a pre-stack seismic gather.

Quantitative AVO Interpretation - How are AVO attributes interpreted by quantitative means

Seismic inversion of rock interval properties - How AVO attributes are inverted and combined into elastic parameters
