This program is designed to help you understand the requirements of working with naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM). You will learn about the characteristics of NORM, the hazards and safeguards for working with NORM, and DOT 49 CFR 173.421 regulatory requirements for labeling and transporting it.

- Identify the naturally occurring sources of NORM and where NORM may exist in the facility.
- Describe the three types of radiation.
- Describe the units and types of equipment used to test for the presence of NORM.
- Describe the health effects that may occur when exposed to NORM.
- Describe how to work safely around NORM.
- Recognize postings and types of areas with NORM.
- Describe how to properly mark drums, piping, containers, and tubes containing NORM material and how to keep proper records.
- Describe proper procedures for obtaining NORM samples from soil, liquids, air, and equipment.
- Describe emergency procedures for different emergency situations involving NORM.
- Describe the procedures used for limited quantity shipments in both exclusive and non-exclusive classifications.
- Describe the procedures used for low specific activity shipments in both exclusive and non-exclusive classifications.
- Describe the procedures used for surface contaminated object shipments in both exclusive and non-exclusive classifications.
- Describe the exclusive use vehicle instructions that are provided to the carrier according to the Code of Federal Regulations.
- Learn procedures and responses for different types of hazards and emergencies.
