New Rosnik Courses: DAD & DTC

Refining and Petrochemical Process Plant Problem Solving (DTC) Course

This month’s focus is on Operating Expense (OPEX) and Unplanned Capacity Loss (UCL), key matrices monitored to get the best results from existing assets. Signals of early trouble are often ignored, units are operated with unsolved problems for years without solutions resulting in less than optimal financial performance. The DPT course suggests identifying problems early by applying statistical methods. The course prepares participants to apply the first principles of unit operations like distillation, heat transfer, reaction engineering and hydraulics to reach optimum solution that results in substantial improvements in OPEX and UCL.

The course is designed for groups involved in troubleshooting of manufacturing facilities in the process industry and for introducing industry best practices in problem solving. The course focuses on resolving process facilities issues such as unit capacity, quality, and reliability. The course, ideally suited for engineers in the operations support roles as well as for the lead operators, provides hands-on training to create a common language and a working knowledge of effective problem-solving techniques.

Early part of the course reviews general process plant problem solving techniques, with focus on real-life process plant problems. Techniques to develop accurate definition of the problem, technically correct working hypothesis, solution optimization and management communication best practices (while in the problem-solving mode) will be discussed. The second half of the course covers application of process engineering principles in problem solving. Primary emphasis is on pragmatic, theoretically correct calculation techniques. The course includes both sample problems as well as real-life examples.

Decision Analysis (DA) Training for Downstream and Chemical Installations - DAD

What is Decision Analysis Downstream (DAD) course?

  • Decision Analysis (DA), also known as Decision Quality, is an Industry Best-in-Class approach to address strategic issues to arrive at the optimum solution
  • DA is a systematic methodology for managing risk and uncertainty by:
    • Facilitating high quality, logical discussions
    • Bringing clarity to difficult decisions
    • Leading to clear and compelling set of actions
  • The key objectives of the methodology are to:
    • Provide a mechanism to achieve alignment among all stakeholders
    • Develop robust set of alternatives to explore the entire decision space
    • Apply the appropriate evaluation tools that provide the basis for a compelling decision with the minimum amount of analytical rigor
    • If appropriate, leverage a probabilistic framework to explicitly deal with risk and uncertainty
    • Develop executable, optimized solutions to strategic issues

What will you learn?

  • Unambiguously define the Strategic Question (Opportunity Statement)
  • Identify all the boundaries to define the Scope
  • Define the Objectives to establish the Decision Criteria
  • Consider the total decision space in Framing alternate solutions to the Strategic Question
  • Secure Decision Maker endorsement of the Strategic Question, Scope and Objectives and Alternative Solutions
  • Apply the appropriate process and analytical tools for the evaluation of alternative solutions
  • Optimize the solution by developing hybrid alternatives
  • Methodology is scalable to apply to a broad range of decision situation complexity
  • Deployment of process and tools is driven by the project complexity and level of financial exposure
